The buzz may be a little less this time around, but it still can be felt. The India vs. Pakistan clash which is often termed as the mother of all rivalries, will this time take place in the shortest format of the game at the Asia Cup 2025.
There are political tensions between the two countries. The recent unfortunate Pahalgam attack has further fueled animosity between the two countries, and a cricket match in these circumstances might be played more on emotion than on skill.
This will be the 6th match of the ongoing Asia Cup and both teams with a win under their belt will be looking to land the first punch. In this moment of chaos, it is interesting to look at the head-to-head record of the two nations when it comes to Asia Cup battles over the years.
In all, India and Pakistan have met each other on 19 separate occasions over the years. India has dominated the Asia Cup results with 10 wins out of the 19 contests. In reply to Pakistan has been able to notch up 6 victories. The remaining 3 matches have ended in no result due to rain.
The first ever Asia Cup clash between the two teams was back in 1984. The Indian team was fresh off a World Cup win and looked a confident unit, and they outplayed Pakistan in that clash as they beat their archrivals by 54 runs. India won the next contest as well in 1988.
Pakistan responded in style as they won four back-to-back matches between 1995 and 2008. However, post that Pakistan was never able to reignite the same consistency as India won eight matches from there on in comparison to the two victories of Pakistan which too came 8 years apart.
India in recent times have always had the better of Pakistan and that doesn’t come down to just the wins but also the victory margins. Their last Asia Cup match which was an ODI contest in 2023 was won by India by a margin of 228 runs.
However, interestingly, their recent T20 Asia Cup contests in 2022 have been shared 1-1 with both teams winning thrillers in the last over. Fans would hope that both teams can continue challenging each other in the T20 format and bring out yet another India vs. Pakistan classic.
A look at 3 most memorable India vs. Pakistan Asia Cup clashes
India vs. Pakistan is a high voltage clash that keeps the crowd from both sides of the border glued to their TV sets. Let’s look back at 3 such matches that had both the countries biting their nails right to the end.
The first one was back in 2012. Pakistan batted first and brought up a massive 224 run opening stand. Md. Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed brought up 100s and Pakistan scored a mammoth 329. In reply India was rocked early as Gautam Gambhir was out for 0.
A young Virat Kohli walked in at number 3 and stitched 100+ run partnerships with both Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma who both scored 50s in the chase. Kohli brought up a magnificent 183 and with that special innings India managed to track down 330 runs with the loss of just four wickets.

The following Asia Cup in 2014 saw another tight contest between the two sides. It was an Indian side without Tendulkar or MS Dhoni that batted first and scored 245 runs. In reply Pakistan stitched small partnerships while regularly losing wickets, till the equation came down to 9 runs of 4 balls with Shahid Afridi the only known batter out there.
With him was the number 11 Junaid Khan and Pakistan had just one wicket. Ravichandran Ashwin was bowling the last over and Afridi valiantly swung twice in two balls to send both out of the park to secure a remarkable one wicket win for his side.
The following Asia Cup in 2016 saw another Virat Kohli masterclass but it initially wasn’t supposed to be that difficult. India put Pakistan into bat first and the fragile Pakistani batting line up crumbled as they could only manage 83 runs. The clash was hyped for the return of Mohammad Amir who was making a comeback after a 5-year ban because of corruption in the sport.
Amir made an instant impact as he brought India on the floor in just 3 overs as they were reeling at 8-3. It was the start of one of the great battles of the modern era as Virat Kohli stepped up against the quality pace bowling of Amir.
He held one end tight – with great focus and cricket IQ the batter scored a match winning 49 off 51 balls. India would initially have looked to chase the total in less than 10 overs, but it took 15.3 overs to get over the line.
