Indian football icon and national team captain Sunil Chhetri has tested positive for the coronavirus. The 36-year-old took to Twitter today to announce the news stating that he feels fine and that he would try to be back to the football pitch as early as possible after recovery.

Chhetri was most recently seen in action in the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL) where he captains Bengaluru FC. He wasn’t able to take his team to the semi-final as they finished 8th, nine points adrift of fourth placed FC Goa. Chhetri was also named in the probable list for the international friendlies against Oman and UAE which have been scheduled to be held on March 25 and 29 in Dubai. His presence in the squads for the same is now in serious doubt and it is unlikely that he will feature.

Sunil Chhetri took to Twitter to confirm the news of him testing positive for COVID-19. He wrote, “In a not-so-happy update, I’ve tested positive for COVID-19. In better news, I feel fine as I continue my recovery from the virus and should be back on a football pitch soon. No better time to keep reminding everyone to continue taking all the safety precautions always.

Fans of Indian football would dearly want the talismanic skipper to get back to the field as soon as possible. Although India are very much capable of notching up wins without their captain, the diminutive player’s presence on the pitch tends to boost the entire team’s performance as a leader’s performance should.
