Iga Swiatek vs. Qinwen Zheng: Match Preview

Iga Swiatek started the season at the United Cup, helping Poland reach back-to-back finals but her team once again failed in their attempt to take home the title. Following the mixed-gender tournament, Swiatek kickstarted her singles campaign at the Australian Open.

Swiatek made huge strides toward her first title at Melbourne Park but failed to overcome eventual winner Madison Keys in the semifinals. The 23-year-old progressed to back-to-back semifinals when she reached the last four at the Qatar Open.

Swiatek was bidding to become a four-time champion in Doha but was no match for Jelena Ostapenko, who extended her head-to-head lead over Swiatek to 5-0. Mirra Andreeva then got the better of Swiatek in the Dubai Open quarterfinals, beating her in straight sets.

En route to the Indian Wells quarterfinals, the four-time French Open champion registered all her victories without breaking a sweat. She kickstarted her campaign by knocking out Caroline Garcia 6-0, 6-2; following which, Dayana Yastremska suffered a similar fate as Swiatek clinched a 6-2, 6-0 win over her.

Qinwen Zheng, on the other hand, chose not to play in the warm-up tournaments ahead of the Australian Open. Last year’s Australian Open finalist started her season at the Melbourne Slam but shockingly fell to Laura Siegemund in the second round.

The World No.9 had disappointing campaigns in the Middle East Swing, for she was knocked out of her opening round matches in both Doha and Dubai. At Indian Wells, Zheng eliminated the likes of Victoria Azarenka, Lulu Sun, and Marta Kostyuk in straight sets to schedule the quarterfinal match against Swiatek.

Iga Swiatek vs. Qinwen Zheng: Match Prediction

Iga Swiatek will enter the quarterfinal match as the favorite to win, for she is a two-time Indian Wells champion, lifting the title last year and in 2022, beating Maria Sakkari in both finals. She made her debut in the tournament back in 2021 and reached the fourth round. Swiatek was the semifinalist in 2023, losing to eventual winner Elena Rybakina in straight sets.

Qinwen Zheng achieved her best result in the tournament, as before this, she had only reached the second round twice. Zheng is also 1-6 against the five-time Grand Slam champion.

The former World No.1, however, was defeated by the Chinese in the Paris Olympics semifinals last year. She went on to win the bronze medal, while Zheng was crowned as the Olympic champion.

The World No.2 still hasn’t won a title since the 2024 French Open where she clinched her fourth Roland Garros title. The 22-year-old, on the other hand, last won a WTA title in the 2024 Japan Open.

Match Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in three sets.
