In Short
  • Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina will meet in the final of Indian Wells 2026 for the 16th time.
  • Rybakina has lost only four matches since October 2022 and is expected to rise to World No.2 next week.

Aryna Sabalenka vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Preview

Aryna Sabalenka won her first and only title of the season at the Brisbane International and then reached the final of the Australian Open in January. She failed to claim the title for the second consecutive season after losing to Elena Rybakina in three sets. She didn’t feature in any tournament in February as she was sidelined due to an injury.

She returned to tour in Indian Wells with a crushing win over Japanese qualifier Himeno Sakatsume, 6-4, 6-2. Sabalenka swept aside Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-4, 6-1. The World No.1 then went on to defeat former Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka 6-2, 6-4. The World No.1 then eased past Victoria Mboko in straight sets before beating Czech Republic star Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-4.

On the other hand, Elena Rybakina kicked off her season at the Brisbane International, where she failed to get past the quarter-finals. But at the Australian Open, she stunned the tennis world by winning her second Grand Slam. During the Middle East swing, she struggled with fatigue, which forced her to retire in Dubai and then crash out in the quarter-finals of the Doha Open.

In Indian Wells, she dropped her first set in her opening match against Hailey Baptiste but navigated her way to a 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-2 win. In the third round, she breezed past Marta Kostyuk before Sonay Kartal decided to retire from their fourth-round clash. The Kazakhstan star got the better of Jessica Pegula 6-1, 7-6(4) and then saw off Elina Svitolina 7-5, 6-4 at the California desert.

Aryna Sabalenka vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Prediction

Aryna Sabalenka is seeking to win her first Indian Wells title in her career. The Belarusian star finished as runner-up in 2023 and 2025. She lost to Elena Rybakina in the 2023 final. Last year, she won the opening set against Mirra Andreeva but collapsed in the second and third sets, which allowed the Russian star to win the match.

One of Sabalenka’s undoings is her difficulty keeping her emotions in check in critical moments of finals. Since the start of the 2024 season, she has lost six championship matches, more than any player in the WTA and ATP. She often played into her opponent’s hands, who made sure they didn’t do the same in return.

Rybakina has won four of her last five meetings in finals against Sabalenka, most recently at the WTA Finals in November and the Australian Open in January. The only time the World No.3 lost to Sabalenka in a final was at the 2023 Australian Open. However, Sabalenka holds a slim 8-7 lead over Rybakina in their head-to-head record on tour.

Match Prediction: Elena Rybakina to win three sets.
