The Japanese star kicked off the new season at the United Cup, where she managed to win just one match before her country crashed out in the group stages. In Melbourne, she won two matches before pulling out due to an injury.

Still searching for her first tour-level title since returning from maternity leave, Osaka took to the court in Indian Wells, defeating Romanian qualifier Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva in the second round. She then went on to beat Camila Osorio 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in the third round, a revenge for her loss to the Colombian star last year at this tournament.

Both players will now compete for a place in the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells Open having just returned from injury.
