The Indian contingent clinched as many as 9 medals at the Cologne Boxing World Cup held in Germany. The 9 medals included 3 golds as Amit Panghal, Manisha Moun and Simranjit Kaur all came up trumps. There was a silver medal that was clinched in unfortunate fashion as super heavyweight boxer Satish Kumar had to pull out of the final after a terrific showing in the semi-finals.
Sakshi Chaudhary also clinched a silver in the women’s category in an all-Indian final against Manisha Moun. The remaining 4 medals were bronzes won by Sonia Lather (57kg), Pooja Rani (75kg) Gaurav Solanki (57kg), and Mohamed Hussamudin (57kg).
Kiren Rijiju sends in his hearty congratulations
Following the Indian boxers’ terrific showing in the World Cup, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju took to Twitter to send in his wishes to the medalists and participants. “Our Indian boys and girls have won 9 medals including 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bonze Medals at the prestigious Cologne Boxing World Cup. India has achieved tremendous progress in Boxing. My hearty congratulations to our star Boxers!” he said.
The Indian boxing contingent will next have its eyes on the Tokyo Olympic Games which will be held in 2021 after being postponed from its initial 2020 schedule to the COVID-19 pandemic.
