Injured Nick Bosa took his place inside the VIP suite at Levi’s Stadium on Monday to cheer for Brock Purdy, who started his second straight game for the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners searched for a win against the joint leaders of the NFC South, the Carolina Panthers.

To say the game was eventful would be an understatement. Purdy, who threw 3 touchdowns against the Cardinals in week 11, conceded three interceptions on Monday Night Football.

The Panthers couldn’t take advantage of Purdy’s shaky outing because Bryce Young was just as off target. The former first overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner tossed two interceptions, both snagged by Niners safety Ji’Ayir Brown.

Brown snagged his second pick with 6:31 minutes left in the fourth quarter. After snapping the ball on 2 & 8, Young fired a pass in the direction of the rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan. However, Brown intercepted the pass for the game’s sixth turnover.

Nick Bosa savored the takeaway while sipping beer in the comfort of friends and family.

Why didn’t Nick Bosa play against the Panthers?

Bosa was in street clothes as he was inactive on Monday. The All-Pro pass is rehabbing from a torn ACL. During the week 3 fixture against the Cardinals, Bosa’s knee bent awkwardly after being tackled to the ground by the Cardinals’ O-line with just a minute left until the final whistle.

The Niners placed Bosa on IR before undergoing a season-ending surgery. He has been in rehab ever since.

Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac tweeted that the pass rusher is losing nearly “$411,754 of per-game-active bonus this season.” It’s not like he can’t afford to lose a bit of money. Bosa is guaranteed $122.5 million as part of his five-year, $170 million contract with the 49ers. That includes $22.6 million guaranteed for the 2026 season.

Bosa isn’t the only big name missing from the 49ers roster. Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been sidelined since October 2024 after suffering a knee injury.

Aiyuk made headlines again after the Niners chose to void the guaranteed money for the 2026 season from his four-year, $120 million deal, signed before the 2024 NFL season. The unexpected move came as a result of his lack of participation.

Fred Warner is another name missing from the team. The All-Pro linebacker suffered a dislocated and broken ankle in the Niners’ week 6 defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Warner underwent a season-ending surgery a few days later.

The 49ers defeated the Panthers

Purdy compensated for his turnovers by throwing a touchdown pass to WR Jauan Jennings and setting up Christian McCaffrey for a score on the ground. Veteran kicker Matt Gay went 2 for 2 in field goal conversion and scored one extra point, securing a 20-9 victory for the 49ers.

Purdy finished with 23 completions from 32 pass attempts for 193 yards, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions. McCaffrey capped off the day with 24 carries for 89 yards, 1 TD, along with 7 catches for 53 yards.

The win improved the Niners’ record to 8-4 (third in the NFC West). Next week, the Niners play Shedeur Sanders and the Cleveland Browns.
