The Detroit Lions have been lights out this season and as the playoffs near, they have been viewed as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. However, the team has dealt with a huge concern for the whole season and that is losing their players to injuries. The latest blow to the Lions comes in the form of David Montgomery.

The star running back, who has been at the forefront of the Lions offense, has suffered an MCL injury in his knee and could potentially miss the rest of the season including the playoffs, as reported by Adam Schefter.

He went down with the injury in the Week 15 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, but he played the whole game and just got his knee checked out on the sidelines.

Despite the initial diagnosis, David Montgomery will be subject to further testing and then a final call will be taken. However, if he is no longer available for the Lions this season, then it comes as a huge blow to Dan Campbell and Jared Goff.

The Detroit Lions have nearly two dozen players listed on Injured Reserve

Although they still have Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit is a bigger threat with the combination of Sonic and Knuckles as Gibbs and Montgomery are known. When they are on the field together, it makes it harder for defenses to concentrate their focus on just one individual.

Both of them have been having a phenomenal year as they created history by becoming the first duo in NFL history to have double-digit rushing touchdowns in consecutive seasons. Montgomery recently signed a contract extension to stay with the team for two more seasons.

The absence of Montgomery will require Dan Campbell to step back from the trick plays he loves to run to baffle defenses. The combination of his speed and athleticism has enabled him to execute some wonderful plays so far.

The Detroit Lions are getting short-staffed each week, and this has to be concerning as their odds of making it to the Super Bowl are going down along with their players.

So far, the team has struggled with nearly 22 players on the injured reserve. Stars who can have a big impact on the team, such as Aidan Hutchinson, Alex Anzalone, Alim McNeill, Carlton Davis, Kalif Raymond, and Malcolm Rodrigues, are all out indefinitely.

The Lions lost four players on Sunday to injuries. It appears that their kryptonite is not an NFL team but is the ability to stay healthy this season.
