One of the biggest controversies of the 2025 NASCAR offseason was the charter lawsuit. 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports sued the sport ownership last season and after a year of ugly court battle, alongside two weeks of trail in December the case was settled. Michael Jordan and Jim France agreed to have evergreen charter as well as work together for the betterment of the sport.

One of many dramas during the trail week was the NBA GOAT Michael Jordan calling out senior NASCAR journalist Bob Pockrass publicly. The latter talked about it on his appearance on the Awful Announcing podcast and admitted that he still doesn’t know what he wrote that forced the reaction. He also highlighted how he also got compliments from the basketball legend.

AA: What was it like when you got called out by Michael Jordan on his way into the courtroom?

BP: You saw that video, huh? Yeah. I’m still not exactly sure what I said or what I wrote that he felt put me on NASCAR’s side a little bit. He did compliment me one day leaving the courtroom too, for a story.

Further talking about the point, the veteran admitted that such reaction is part of the industry and business he is part of. He is responsible for his comments and observations. The veteran also pointed out that one of the major reasons behind the reaction from the 23XI Racing co-owner was the emotions that were running high during the lawsuit.

But look, we have a little bit—you can call it an arrogant saying in our business—but if you don’t want it printed, don’t let it happen, right? So, when you’re in this business and you’re commentating and writing, you shouldn’t be surprised if somebody reacts. Emotions are high in this lawsuit.

Bob Pockrass added.

What was actually at stake for Michael Jordan during the lawsuit?

In the same conversation, Pockrass explained what was at stake for the Jordan in the lawsuit. He pointed out that the team risked their whole multi-million investment and future of their 100 employees, with the lawsuit.

It’s a lot of money for a lot of people. Jordan was risking the future of his team by filing this lawsuit, knowing he had over 100 employees counting on him to win—or else they were probably going to have to find another job within the next year.

Bob Pockrass said.

This made the whole process emotional for everyone involved, even for Jordan who is known for always keeping his emotions in check. Pockrass went back to his original point on why Jordan called him out with the comment, admitting there will always be people that dislike some views.

So of course emotions are high. Of course feelings are high. And you kind of expect that at some point, somebody isn’t going to view things the same way you do.

Bob Pockrass added.

The comments from the senior NASCAR journalist shows how dramatic the whole charter lawsuit was and how the whole industry desperately needed the lawsuit to be settled. It would be interesting to see how the sport is going to grow with the change and how Jordan is going to be one of the faces of new NASCAR.
