Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers are on a good run of form at the moment after a slump over the last few weeks. After their win over the Dallas Mavericks, the Lakers recorded a convincing 129-118 victory over the Chicago Bulls at the United Center on Monday night. It was their fourth win in their last five games as they look to build some momentum halfway into the campaign.

The Lakers won their third match halfway into their long eight-game road trip. The win improved the Lakers’ record to 28-17, putting them in fifth place in the Western Conference standings. Meanwhile, the loss ended the Bulls’ four-match winning streak, dropping them to 23-23 and leaving them in the play-in positions in the Eastern Conference standings.

Luka Doncic was at his best on Monday as he scored a game-high 46 points to go along with seven rebounds and 11 assists. He leads the league in scoring and is currently averaging 33.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.8 assists.

Despite Doncic’s extraordinary performance, it was the Lakers’ backup center Jaxson Hayes who stole the show on Monday. Hayes made an impact against the Bulls when he produced an “Eastbay Dunk”, leaving everyone stunned.

Lakers forward Jake LaRavia was asked about the dunk in his post-match locker-room interview.

He didn’t get that high. The only player that does it in the league is Obi Toppin.

Doncic chimed in off camera,

I did it when I was a teen. I have a video.

Doncic, who is not really known for his athleticism and explosiveness, was not lying. There is a footage of a 13-year-old Doncic throwing down the Eastbay Dunk.

Since acquiring Luka Doncic in the middle of last season, the Lakers front office has built their roster around the Slovenian guard, making him the focal point of this team. However, despite the Lakers’ strong start to the campaign, many still do not view them as championship contenders this season due to their lack of defense.

Jaxson Hayes admitted he could have missed the dunk

In 23 minutes of action, Hayes recorded eight points, four rebounds, one steal and two blocks. Hayes closed the game over starting center Ayton, which has become a recurring theme over the past few games. The center is known for throwing down powerful dunks by jumping from a long distance away from the rim.

Following the win, Hayes revealed that he expected to miss the dunk in his post-match locker-room interview.

I thought I was about to get hung by the rim so bad and I thought I was about to get yanked out of the game right away. Luckily, god was on my side, it got that the ball over the rim.

It was good, it worked out in the end, or else it would have been an embarrassing moment for the young star. In 37 appearances this season, he is averaging 6.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks.

Luka Doncic can be frustrating

It was a solid performance from Doncic as he put on a scoring masterclass. It was his fourth consecutive 30+ point game and his eighth 40-point game of the 2025-26 campaign. With Austin Reaves still ruled out, the Lakers guard has seen his offensive load go up in recent weeks.

Following the win over the Bulls, Lakers head coach JJ Redick spoke about how coaching the guard can be frustrating in his post-match press conference.

You have to be willing to live with the stuff that he tries. There’s that creative element that he needs to thrive, and you gotta allow that.

It was Doncic’s 65th game for the purple and gold, and he made some franchise history. He became the fastest Laker in franchise history to reach 2,000 points.
