Iowa Hawkeyes fans were understandably unhappy at full-time on Saturday night. Losing to a last-second field goal always brings out the worst among supporters, especially after witnessing a valiant comeback against a team like Dan Lanning‘s Oregon Ducks.

The Big 10 hopefuls arrived at Kinnick Stadium as the betting favorites to take one step closer to qualifying for the title game. Iowa, on the other hand, has always been a tough nut to crack in its own backyard. As an additional bonus, they were on a three-game winning streak, with blowout victories against Minnesota and Wisconsin and a one-point win over Penn State.

The script flipped in week eleven. From winning a close game against previously ranked Nittany Lions, the Hawkeyes suffered a last-second loss at the hands of Oregon.

Lanning’s team was ahead by eight points at the end of the third quarter. Quarterback Dante Moore missed a big chance when the Hawkeyes’ defense stopped a designed run, resulting in negative yardage. In the ensuing play, Iowa scored a field goal to close the deficit by five points.

Iowa chewed up over six minutes of the clock with a 12-play, 90-yard drive, capped off by quarterback Mark Gronowski‘s three-yard touchdown run, giving the Hawkeyes their first lead of the game.

Oregon had the last laugh. Moore orchestrated a 53-yard drive to set up a 39-yard field goal. Atticus Sappington, who was 2/2 prior to the final kick, buried the field goal try, securing a close win for the Ducks.

At full time, Oregon players taunted a section of Hawkeyes supporters, prompting the fans to retaliate by hurling beer cans and slurs at the players. It was a bitter conclusion to an otherwise classic college football matchup.

Dan Lanning reacted to the wild ending of the Oregon-Iowa game

The Iowa game proved Kenyon Sadiq‘s importance in Lanning’s system. Even though Sadique primarily plays as a tight end, he became Moore’s top target in the first nine games of 2025.

Oregon could have made good use of his 311 yards and 5 touchdowns in Iowa. Regardless, the Ducks reigned supreme, and that’s all that matters to Lanning.

That looked like an old school Big Ten game today, [didn’t it?] I tell you what, our resilience, next guy up, the guys stepping up. An unbelievable team we just competed with. They had no quit. Our team had no quit. It’s kind of like, whoever had it last is gonna have a chance. We had a chance tonight.

Dan Lanning told Jenny Dell of CBS Sports

With Moore having a tough day through the air, Oregon ran the ball more. The combination of running backs Noah Whittington, Jordon Davison, Dierre Hill Jr., and Moore racked up a total of 261 yards on the ground.

Moore finished with 13 completions from 21 pass attempts for 112 yards and 1 interception. This improved his season’s tally to 1772 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 4 picks from 15 completions (71.4% completion).

Oregon wraps up the year by hosting the 20th-ranked USC and traveling to the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Huskies. Meanwhile, Iowa will host Michigan State before finishing the season against Nebraska.
