IPL 2021 Auction: Delhi Capitals acquire Steve Smith for 2.2 crores
Steve Smith
Australian batsman Steve Smith has been acquired by the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise in the ongoing auction for the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former Aussie captain was a part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) franchise last year whom he also led. However, under his captaincy, the franchise was unable to perform well as they finished with the wooden spoon.
Smith was able to score only 311 runs for his franchise as well as he was inconsistent throughout with the exception of the first few matches. Like with the whole team’s form, Smith’s form also waned out as the tournament progressed which led to RR eventually deciding to part ways with their captain and elevate Sanju Samson as the captain.
Steve Smith joins hands with Ricky Ponting
Steve Smith will now join hands with the Delhi Capitals (DC) who are coached by his countryman Ricky Ponting. DC have an excellent team at their disposal already as they finished as runners-up last year. With the addition of Smith, their middle-order now looks even more juiced and they would feel that they will now have it in them to go one better this season and win the title.
The auction is taking place in Chennai right now. Smith was sold in the first list. The likes of Jason Roy, Alex Hales and Aaron Finch went unsold and they would hope they go sold in the next round when they go under the hammer again.
