Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, who followed the auction quite closely, spoke about Delhi Capitals (DC) procurements after 2021 VIVO IPL culminated.

With already their core comprising of solid players, they have consolidated their squad even more. Besides, they traded India’s ace pacer, Umesh Yadav, at a very flaccid base price of one crore. Additionally, the got a steal deals as they took Australia’s star batsman Steve Smith for 2.2 crores and grabbed young English player Sam Billings to their side at the base price of 2 crores.

“Shimron Hetmyer probably will play in the middle order. They have got Shikhar Dhawan who is in very good form. They have got Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant plus they will definitely play Hetmyer and Marcus Stoinis. Anriche Nortje and Rabada did really well for them,” Gautam Gambhir told Star Sports.

‘DC never needed Steve Smith,’ reckons Gambhir

“Now they got Chris Woakes as well. Only good thing is that they bought these players at a very cheap price. Had they bought Steve Smith at a very high price, I wouldn’t be very happy with it. Most of these players are steal buys especially Umesh Yadav, Steve Smith, Sam Billings. From that point of view they did a very good job but I actually never thought that they would go for someone like Steve Smith. They never needed someone like Steve Smith,” Gambhir added.
