IPL 2021 Auction: Royal Challengers Bangalore sign Glenn Maxwell for a whopping 14.25 crores

After a fierce bidding war along with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) signed Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for a sum of Rs. 14.25 crores. The two franchises were the only ones in auction apart from some initial interest from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The rest of the tables watched in bated breath as CSK and RCB engaged in to and fro bidding.
Maxwell didn’t have a very good season last year for the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) as he scored only 108 runs. He found the going tough and was eventually dropped from his side’s playing XI. He however, displayed exemplary form in the international matches that followed against India. The all-rounder who can also bowl off-spin was always however, bound to be hot property and the same was proved at the auction.
Glenn Maxwell had already expressed interest in joining RCB
Glenn Maxwell had earlier expressed interest in joining the RCB franchise when he spoke to the media in a virtual press conference ahead of Australia’s T20 series against New Zealand and was asked about potentially playing for RCB in the IPL. He said, “That’ll be awesome. AB [is] one of my idols and one of the guys I’ve always tried to watch the way he goes about [things]. It’ll be awesome to work with him, and he’s always been really helpful to me along the journey. Whenever I’ve caught up with him, he’s been brilliant. So to be able to work with him first hand will be pretty cool. I get along with Virat pretty well. It’ll be certainly nice to work under Virat and will certainly enjoy batting with him – that’s for sure.”
Speaking about his overall experience in the history of the tournament, Maxwell had said, “I suppose to have the luck to go back there [for] most years has been awesome for my cricket. It’s been great to have the experience of playing around the best players in the world and learn from different teams as well. We’ve had different coaches – Punter [Ricky Ponting at Capitals], Sanjay Bangar, [Virender] Sehwag [both at Kings XI] – and it’s been awesome. People ask me if my cricket would be different if I didn’t go for that [IPL], but I have no idea. But I don’t think it would because I don’t feel I’ve changed too much as a person.”
