The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise had a below-par season by their standards last season as they finished 7th. The famed batting line-up and its habit of taking chases deep to pull them off didn’t seem to work. The bowling attack seemed rusty at times as well. With no batsman able to lead from the front with the bat, the side was well and truly in a crisis last season. Only a late surge helped them finish ahead of Rajasthan Royals (RR).
This year, CSK chose to retain a big chunk of their players as they surprisingly chose to release just one overseas player – the retired Shane Watson. At the auction, they bought the likes of Moeen Ali, K Gowtham and Cheteshwar Pujara. They also acquired Robin Uthappa in the trade window. Before the mega-auction next year, CSK will be desperate to come good and make it to the playoffs.
CSK call up Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana
With the IPL 2021 set to begin on April 9, sides have already started having training camps to prepare for the tournament. In that vein, Chennai Super Kings have also started with a training camp. For the same, they have called up two Sri Lankan uncapped players Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana. They will be reserve players in the CSK squad but will be able to make the squad only in case of injuries to an overseas player.
Theekshana is a right-arm off-spinner who has impressed in the Sri Lankan domestic circuit. He was a part of the Jaffna Stallions in the Lankan Premier League. Pathirana on the other hand is a fast bowler with a slingy action like that of Lasith Malinga. Both players have applied for NOC and once they receive it, they will fly to India.
