IPL 2021: Chennai Super Kings release Kedar Jadhav, Piyush Chawla and Murali Vijay ahead of auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a horror show in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) by their standards as they finished 7th and missed out on a playoff spot for the first time ever in their history. Their side failed to produce consistent performances and grandstand finishes that they are usually known for. They struggled with issues of team combination throughout the tournament.
Starting the 2021 edition with the minimum purse, CSK set about releasing a few of their players to free up the purse for buys in the auction. In that regard, they’ve released players who underperformed in 2020 like Kedar Jadhav, Murali Vijay, Piyush Chawla and Monu Singh while also releasing Harbhajan Singh who didn’t take part. The retired Shane Watson will also not take part.
CSK retain 18 players including Suresh Raina

Other than the 6 who were released, CSK have retained their core players amounting to a total of 18 retentions. Suresh Raina who didn’t take part in IPL 2020 due to ‘personal reasons’ has been retained despite speculations being rife that he wouldn’t be. He will thus be expected to be the vice-captain for the side in 2021.
CSK however, will have a lot to do at the auction in mid-February to put together a side capable of challenging for the title. In the absence of Shane Watson at the top, they are bound to be on the lookout for an overseas opener. They would also be in need of a solid middle-order batsman, preferably from India. A busy auction in February beckons for the Men in Yellow.
