Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a season to forget in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as their side failed to come together as a unit to perform consistently. Playing in the UAE, away from the familiar conditions in Chepauk, CSK struggled with issues of intent and team combination which led them to not qualify for the playoffs for the first time in their history.

Suresh Raina, their vice-captain and loyal servant pulled out of the tournament beforehand due to ‘personal reasons’ which dealt a huge blow as the 34-year-old’s all-rounder abilities were sorely missed. It now seems like despite the rumors of a rift with management, Raina is set to be retained ahead of the auction which will take place in mid-February. The official announcement will be made today when each team announced its list of retained players.

According to reports from The Indian Express, a decision on Raina’s retention has been made and he has been retained. “Yes, we will retain Raina and Dhoni will be the captain. Apart from Harbhajan Singh, we might release a few more players,” a CSK official reportedly said.

Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh has already announced that he hasn’t been retained by the franchise through a tweet on his official handle saying, “As my contract comes to an end with @ChennaiIPL, playing for this team was a great experience..beautiful memories made &some great friends which I will remember fondly for years to come..Thank you @ChennaiIPL, management, staff and fans for a wonderful 2years.. All the best…”

Meanwhile, 3 players who underperformed in 2020, Piyush Chawla, Murali Vijay and Kedar Jadhav have been released into the auction pool.
