IPL 2021: CSK vs DC – Match 2, How can Chennai Super Kings subdue last season’s finalists Delhi Capitals?

Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who had a below-par Indian Premier League (IPL) season last year will meet finalists Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today. The MS Dhoni-led side were unable to make a mark last year as they failed to make their way to the playoffs for the first time ever in their history. It was only some late form that helped them avoid the wooden spoon.

This time around, CSK have brought in a host of players including K Gowtham, Moeen Ali, Cheteshwar Pujara and Robin Uthappa. With the new signings and buoyed by the return of Suresh Raina, the side would once again fancy their chances of making it to the playoff and proving that last season was a mere one-off. However, DC would not be easy opponents at all.

On that note, we take a look at how Chennai Super Kings can get the better of Delhi Capitals.

IPL 2021: CSK vs DC – Key for CSK #1: Bat fearlessly

Chennai Super Kings are famed for their approach of taking chases and their innings deep and settling down before unleashing a final flourish. Unfortunately, the plan did not work out last year as the said ‘final flourish’ seldom arrived. The likes of MS Dhoni and the now-sold Kedar Jadhav just could not deliver.

This time around Suresh Raina is back and he exemplifies a fearless approach to batting which CSK might have to take from the word go. With the wealth of batting talent in the DC line-up and the bowlers that they are up against, CSK can ill afford to be casual in their batting approach lest they not reach a good total, irrespective of the innings.

IPL 2021: CSK vs DC: Key for CSK #2: Don’t let DC openers get going

The Delhi Capitals openers troubled the Chennai Super Kings bowlers last season with fantastic knocks. It was Prithvi Shaw who came up with a half-century in the first match before Shikhar Dhawan put up a knock for the ages to get to his maiden IPL century. If the two or even one of the two get going, it would spell trouble for CSK.

The key for the bowlers would thus be to not let the duo settle and to dismiss them early. The onus will be on the likes of Deepak Chahar and Sam Curran to do so failing which, the openers would set a good platform for the likes of Rishabh Pant and Marcus Stoinis to explode, leading to CSK staring at what could be a huge total.
