IPL 2021: Royal Challengers Bangalore inch past Delhi Capitals by 1 run thanks to AB de Villiers’ 75

AB de Villiers
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were propelled to the top of the table by a vintage innings-saving knock from the ever-reliable AB de Villiers against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The win was RCB’s fifth of the season while DC slumped to just their second defeat of the season following their earlier one against Rajasthan Royals (RR).
At the toss, DC won the toss and opted to field first with the dew in mind. They brought in Ishant Sharma for Ravichandran Ashwin who has returned home due to concerns over the COVID-19 situation in his extended family. RCB meanwhile, brought in Rajat Patidar instead of Navdeep Saini and Daniel Sams instead of Daniel Christian to bolster their batting attack at the cost of bowling.
AB de Villiers’ knock proves to be the difference as Shimron Hetmyer and Rishabh Pant fall short

RCB began the first innings in cautious fashion before it all went wrong as they lost both their openers to bowled dismissals. Both Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal saw their stumps dislodged as DC were on top. Glenn Maxwell and Rajat Patidar came up with useful knocks to set the stage for an AB de Villiers assault and that was exactly what happened. The South African flattened the DC death bowling to finish with 75 runs to take RCB past 170.
There was a delay during the innings break due to a sandstorm before play resumed. Shikhar Dhawan lost his wicket early to put DC on the back foot. With the other batters not hanging around for too long, Rishabh Pant sought to anchor the innings. The DC skipper did not take a lot of risks as he took the match deep along with Shimron Hetmyer. With both lefties getting fifties, it was left to Pant to hit six off the last ball to win. However, all he could manage was a four as RCB came up trumps.
