The Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) was suspended three days ago after COVID-19 cases breached the teams’ bio-bubbles. The situation in India was and continues to be extremely dire, but the tournament was taking place amid strict precautions and restrictions. But with the pandemic getting past the bubbles, there was no choice for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) but to postpone it.

Soon after the postponement, the BCCI stated that its main aim now was to get all players back home safely. The issue with regard to the same was that there were travel bans imposed in Australia on all flights from India till May 15. Therefore, the Australians were stranded in India. This led to the whole contingent being transported to Maldives so that they can stay there till the ban is lifted.

Other overseas players meanwhile have returned home. The Englishmen with the exception of Eoin Morgan, Chris Jordan and Dawid Malan reached the Heathrow airport two days ago. Similarly, the New Zealand test contingent went to UK while the rest went home. It was the same with the South Africans and West Indians as well.

The Kolkata Knight Riders franchise took to Twitter today to announce the news of the Australians and their skipper Eoin Morgan traveling to the Maldives. Posting a picture of Australians Ben Cutting, David Hussey and Pat Cummins in full PPE kits along with a picture of Morgan walking to his flight, the franchise gave its fans a ‘travel update’.

They captioned the post, “KKR Overseas Players & Support Staff Travel Update: Goodbye to the Skipper, Mentor, Carnage Cummins and our ace all-rounder as they safely exit the Indian border into Maldives. Wishing you legends safe transit home & see you soon!”

The Aussies will now wait for the travel ban to get lifted before they reach home. It remains unclear as to for how long Morgan would remain in the Maldives.
