Punjab Kings (PBKS) got off to a good start in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as they clinched a high-scoring thriller against Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, what followed has been two disappointing performances – one with the bat and the other with the ball. This has meant that they have now slumped to 7th place in the table, one place above their opponents today – Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
SRH have had a proper horror start to their season as they have lost their first three matches. Each match has followed the same template of a satisfactory bowling performance followed by a good start with the bat which is then thrown away or neutralized by the middle-order. The Orange Army would thus be desperate for a win tonight.

PBKS probably have the least balanced team combination of all teams based on the XI they have fielded in the first three matches. They neither bat deep nor do they have a reliable sixth bowling option. They have exactly six batsmen and exactly five bowlers and this lack of all-rounders has clearly hurt them in both departments of the game.
This is why making changes is a must. An all-rounder like Moises Henriques, Fabian Allen or even a low bowling all-rounder like Chris Jordan could work wonders in correcting the team’s balance. Riley Meredith can make way for one of the three and if that happens, PBKS will look a much stronger side.

PBKS skipper KL Rahul is among the most consistent batsmen in the IPL. He has carried the PBKS batting with his stellar performances over the course of the last few years. However, in recent times, a problem has loomed with regard to his strike-rate and intent. The opener has been found wanting in that regard as his slow knocks even on batting belters have cost his side.
Rahul’s approach is understandable given that he wants to take responsibility and anchor the innings due to the long tail. Therefore, addressing the aforesaid first issue by bringing in all-rounder could free up responsibility on the part of the skipper and if he bats with a bit more positive intent, PBKS could be a force to reckon with.
