Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a below-par Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2020 by their standards. For the first time ever in their history, they failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing 7th. Their batsmen struggled to get consistent scores, their team combination looked off, their bowlers couldn’t pick wickets in heaps, their fielding bar a few moments was poor. In short, their season was one to forget.

With the mini-auction for the 2021 edition of the IPL set to be held in the second week of February and with teams required to finalize their player retentions by this month, it seems likely that CSK will look to go for a large overhaul with an eye on the future and to bounce back in the tournament.

‘He was not in the best of form’

Kedar Jadhav

Indian international batsman Kedar Jadhav was one of the players in the CSK line-up who received a lot of flak in 2020 for his performances. The 35-year-old was tasked with holding the CSK middle-order but his agonizingly slow innings did more bad than good for his franchise. He was eventually dropped from the team to make way for youngsters as the tournament progressed. He ended up with 62 runs in 8 games at a strike rate of less than 100 in the season.

It now seems that Jadhav is set to be released by CSK ahead of the auction. “Jadhav was not in best of form in IPL 2020. He was also struggling with his fitness. CSK will move on from Jadhav in IPL-2021, everyone in the team management feels that it will be prudent to take this hard call and invest in future,” a source is said to have quoted according to InsideSport. Jadhav was bought for 7.8 crores and it now seems more than likely that he will lose the contract as CSK go through a rebuilding phase.
