IPL 2021: Kings XI Punjab get officially renamed as Punjab Kings; new logo unveiled

The Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) franchise has officially been renamed as Punjab Kings for the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) onwards. The franchise is one of the eight original franchises in the IPL but has never got its hands on the IPL trophy. The side has been a perpetually underachieving one and with an eye on a change in fortunes, the change in name has been done.

KXIP had an IPL season of ups and downs last year as they got off to a bad start before making a stunning comeback that put them right back in contention for the playoffs. However, a loss in the final league game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) meant they couldn’t qualify for the same and had to be happy with a 6th place finish.

‘Punjab Kings is a more evolved brand name’

The franchise’s CEO Satish Menon spoke about the change in name and according to TOI said, “Punjab Kings is a more evolved brand name, and we understand it was a right time for us to move focus on the core brand itself. The change in brand identity is not about changing our brand ethos but celebrating our one-ness as we stand in unity like a family. The new logo honors the liveliness and vibrancy of the brand and provides modern elements, while we stand out from the rest of the teams.”

The Punjab Kings have the highest purse for tomorrow’s IPL auction which will take place from 3 pm. They have a whopping amount of 53.20 crores to spend and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the franchise chooses to spend large on big names who will go under the hammer.
