IPL 2021: ‘I thought we could have got more’ – MS Dhoni reflects on Chennai Super Kings’ second win on the trot

MS Dhoni
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) sealed yet another thumping win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 to retake the second spot on the points table. A poor effort from the batting unit saw Rajasthan Royals (RR) saw them concede a 45 run defeat. CSK were phenomenal in all departments of the game and deservingly sealed a comprehensive victory.
A brilliant knock of 49 from Jos Buttler took the game away from CSK early on. Despite being pumped for runs, CSK skipper MS Dhoni stuck with just two bowlers in the powerplay. Dhoni shares that he understood a good start was required and hence he had his best bowlers bowl there three overs on the trot.

“I always look at what’s the best to do at any point of time. When you keep doing it, they’re always under the pump. Deepak there was a bit of miscalculation with the knuckle delivery. So I felt a good start was important,” Dhoni said following the game.
“A lot has changed since last season,” MS Dhoni

Dhoni shares that the lack of dew made the pitch sticky and it aided the spinners. It was CSK’s spin twins in Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja who scalped five wickets between them to bring their side back into the game. Taking of the last season, the CSK skipper explains that the results of IPL 2020 has changed the way the side prepares.
“Even the wet ball was spinning. I don’t really mind Jos playing reverse sweep. If the wet ball was turning then the chance of the dry ball turning is high. It was good to have Moeen, it was turning a bit. The wicket became a bit more sticky. Glad we scored 180, I thought we could have got more. The first six balls I played could have cost us in another game,” Dhoni adds.
“A lot has changed. The way we have prepared, the way we have turned down. The bowlers have been under the pump last year also, so they’re used t the conditions.“
In a first, Dhoni dived while trying to make it back to the crease tonight. He shares that it is tough maintaining fitness but then again when one plays in such a competitive league, they have to keep up. “Getting old and being fit – those are two difficult things! When you’re playing you don’t want anyone to call you unfit. I have to keep up with youngers guys, they run a lot, but it’s always challenging,” he signed off.
Inconsistency continues to haunt RR as their struggle in IPL continues. The middle-order seemed anything but non-existent while the bowlers did an impressive job. The likes of Sanju Samson and David Miller as well as Shivam Dube will have to step up. Their absence leaves too much on the shoulders of Buttler.
