IPL 2021: Shikhar Dhawan’s 92 helps Delhi Capitals secure win over Punjab Kings
Shikhar Dhawan
Delhi Capitals (DC) notched up their second win of the season as they got past Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Winning the toss and opting to bat first, DC made two changes as they brought in Steve Smith and Lukman Meriwala. PBKS on the other hand, brought in Jalaj Saxena for Murugan Ashwin, looking to add further depth to their batting that looked shallow in the previous match.
PBKS got off to a fantastic start on the night as Mayank Agarwal came out all guns blazing, taking on the debutant Meriwala. KL Rahul at the other end, played the role of an anchor as he offered excellent support to the explosive Agarwal. The two showed no signs of stopping as the latter got to a half-century. Just when he looked set for a century, Meriwala provided the breakthrough, sending him back for 69.
Shikhar Dhawan helps ace a stiff chase
After Agarwal’s dismissal, the run flow stopped a bit as Rahul and Chris Gayle struggled to go for the big shots in a brief period. After the duo’s dismissals, there were some good shots from the likes of Deepak Hooda and Shahrukh Khan which helped PBKS inch close to 200 as they ended on 195.
Beginning a stiff chase, Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw began much like they did against the Chennai Super Kings in their win. After a brisk start, Shaw holed out before Dhawan enjoyed an excellent partnership with Steve Smith. The southpaw was the aggressor as he was at his brutal best, toying with the PBKS bowlers. Despite his dismissal on 92 and that of Smith, Rishabh Pant and Marcus Stoinis kept the scoreboard before the former was dismissed but by the damage was done and DC were soon home.
