IPL 2021: Pragyan Ojha believes that Kane Williamson would be a perfect successor of MS Dhoni to lead CSK in the future
MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings are back to winning ways after a horrible 2020 IPL season. They are at the top of the points table after registering a comfortable win against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 28th April. It was their fifth consecutive win of the season and they look like favourites to clinch the IPL trophy.
But, there are certain speculations about their skipper MS Dhoni’s retirement and that this could be his last season. Dhoni bid adieu to international cricket last year and soon his IPL career may also come to an end. He has been leading the CSK side since the inaugural edition and has successfully claimed three titles under his belt. His exit would leave the spot of captaincy open and many believe that the star Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja could lead the team in the future.
Although, former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha had some other opinion as he ruled out the prospect of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja taking over as captain in the future, stating that he is more suited to becoming a vice-captain. He also mentioned that Kane Williamson, who isn’t getting much playing time at SRH, might be a good fit.
Kane Williamson, considered among circles as a cool personality like MS Dhoni, has been in and out of the starting lineup of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) due to injuries and team stability problems. The next IPL season will display a mega-auction, with teams only being able to retain a certain number of players. Williamson may be one of the few proven captains to be auctioned.
Pragyan Ojha: “Ravindra Jadeja can be a vice-captain”
“Ravindra Jadeja can be a vice-captain where if you need some help then, he can be your guy. But if you are talking about captaincy, then if there’s one guy who can do it, it’s Kane Williamson. He isn’t being utilized much at SRH. Mega-auction is next year, if MS Dhoni is playing then this question shouldn’t arise in the first place. However, if he doesn’t play then you can bring in Kane Williamson as a captain,” said Pragyan Ojha to Cricbuzz.
In 2018, when David Warner was banned for his role in the ball-tampering controversy, it was Williamson who had led Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL 2018 season’s final. With Warner’s return, Williamson was reduced to a player-only role, but his credentials as a captain are well-known, given the Kiwi’s performance with the New Zealand national cricket team.
Kane Williamson has led New Zealand to the World Cup 2019 finals and will captain the Test team against India in June in the World Test Championship’s final match.
