According to reports from ESPNCricinfo, Rajasthan Royals (RR) have released their skipper Steve Smith ahead of the auction for the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). RR had a difficult season in the UAE in 2020 as they finished last on the points table despite a positive start. Their pace attack with the exception of Jofra Archer and the Indian batters struggled to find consistent form in the season.

Steve Smith looked clueless at times as a skipper and was also not up to the mark with the bat, scoring just 311 runs in 14 games for his side. Soon after the 2020 season, reports and rumors were rife that the Australian would be released ahead of the auction with an eye on appointing an Indian captain. It has now been confirmed by ESPNCricinfo that the reports are indeed true.

Sanju Samson to captain RR?

According to ESPNCricinfo, Steve Smith’s ‘weak impact as a leader and batsman featured prominently in the 2020 season review conducted by the franchise.’ Now, the franchise will be on the lookout for a new captain. It has been understood that Indian batsman Sanju Samson might be the frontrunner to take over captaincy duties.

The wicket-keeper batsman captained Kerala in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and is one of their high-profile players who also represents the Indian national team. With an eye on the future, Samson might be the one the franchise goes for, as their new skipper.
