IPL 2021: WATCH – Ricky Ponting’s motivational speech ahead of Delhi Capitals’ first game

Ricky Ponting has done extremely well for the Delhi Capitals’ side in his 3-year stint so far. They reached the finals last time and would be eyeing to go past the finishing line this season. Ahead of their first clash against Chennai on 10th April, Ricky Ponting after completing the quarantine gave a lively and spirited speech to motivate the Delhi squad.

Ponting started by explaining the values of the four things the team needs to abide by during the campaign. “Alright welcome to the guys that are having their first session today, the guys I’ve just mentioned here. Well done on the effort and intensity that has been shown so far. I have talked to Pravin, I’ve talked to (Mohammad) Kaif last night… the work you boys have done last night so far has been outstanding,” said Ricky as he greets the players and applauds for the energy they have put in during the training sessions.

Ponting shares about his personal life and his memorable journey so far with the Delhi Capitals team. He also shares how the Delhi side has grown over a few seasons and praises the players for what they have done for the team. “Somethings about me, right, that some of you guys don’t know about me, right? 46 years of age, married, three kids from Melbourne. I’ve been in Delhi for three years. The first year I was here, we finished last. Two years ago, we finished third. Last year, we finished second.”

He guides the players with the right values to be applied and explains in detail the importance of each value and how the team can get success adhering to those values.

“This is a different Delhi than it was years ago, right? And the reason that it is, what all you guys have brought to the franchise. Not about me, not about coaches, it’s about you, right? This is your team now. New skipper Rishabh, it’s your team. My coaching has a pretty simple basis. You turn up with the right attitude, you put in the effort, you bring in the commitment, and you care, then you’re sweet with me. Alright? They’re gonna be team values of ours, over the next couple of months.”

“Attitude? I can see it, right? I sit back and watch, I observe, I can see who has got the right attitude and who hasn’t. If you haven’t got the right attitude, you don’t play, as simple as that. If the effort’s not there, you can turn up any day to train, and there’s not a 100% effort there? The same thing, you don’t play. If you don’t commit to what we’re committing to as a group and commit to what you’re trying to get out of every session? I can see it, you don’t play.”

Ponting went on, “And trust me, that the last part of that is, the ‘Care’ side of it. Every great team I have been around, that I have coached or that I have played in, have shown genuine care for one another, right? That’s the difference between the team, right? I don’t care what happened last year. Last Year is done.”

Ricky Ponting is one of the best captains in the world and emphasizes on the importance of winning and points out the difference between playing good and winning. He focused on winning the title this season and enforced on all the players to keep a winning mindset throughout the tournament.

“This is about us making another step forward to winning the IPL, alright? That’s why I’m here. I’m here to win the title. We’ve been close, yes. There have been good seasons, yes. There haven’t been great seasons because we haven’t won it yet, right? We’re all about winning. Anything I say, any meeting we have, any chat we have, any session we have, whether it’s recovery, massage, physio, whatever it is, it’s about making you better so you can win. So that’s my job, the coach’s job every day is to find a way to make every one of you guys better.”

With this, the young Delhi Capitals led by their new captain Rishabh Pant are all set for their clash against an experienced Chennai Super Kings on Saturday.
