IPL 2021: Sanju Samson looks back to the moment he denied single during the Punjab Kings game

Chris Morris and Sanju Samson

Chris Morris, the most expensive player in history of the IPL, had a tough time in the Rajasthan Royals’ opening game of IPL 2021, as newly appointed Sanju Samson denied him a strike when the team needed one massive hit against the Punjab Kings. When they needed 5 from 1 ball, Samson, who hit 119 glorious runs, tried to keep the strike, leaving Morris stunned and dejected.

Morris, who had a look of disappointment on his face after Samson sent him back, demonstrated what he can do if given the chance by finishing the match for RR against DC in the Indian Premier League on Thursday.

Morris scored 36 runs off 18 deliveries to help RR reach their 148-run mark in 19.4 overs. As David Miller was dismissed for a superb 62 off 43 balls, it seemed that RR’s chances of winning the match had vanished. With just three wickets in hand, the Rajasthan franchise required 44 runs in 25 balls.

Morris, on the other hand, proved everyone wrong by bringing up a 46-run stand with Jaydev Unadkat to help RR win the game. As the Royals ended the chase with two balls to spare, Chris Morris redeemed himself with a brilliant blitz against the best in the company, hitting two big sixes off Kagiso Rabada in the 19th over and two more against Tom Curran in the final over.

Captain Samson, speaking after Morris’ game-winning effort, recalled the rejected single from the previous game, saying he would not have taken the single even though he had 100 chances to play the game again.

“I always sit back and review my game, but if I got that match 100 times, I would never take that single,” Samson said.

Morris too revealed that he wanted Sanju Samson to take the strike because he was hitting the ball very brilliantly.

“I was gonna run back no matter what because Sanju was hitting it so sweetly. People underestimate how fast I run. Sanju was hitting it like a dream that night. I wouldn’t have been too upset if he had hit the last ball for a six,” said Morris.

My Take

Would the result have been any different had Sanju Samson taken that single off the penultimate ball? Well, maybe yes. Was Sanju Samson right in refusing to take the single? Yes again. Sanju Samson was in good form and was batting on 119, while his counterpart Chris Morris had scored two runs of four balls. So Sanju Samson was not wrong in backing himself to clear the ropes.
