IPL 2021: Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier test positive for COVID-19; KKR vs RCB match postponed
Sandeep Warrier and Varun Chakravarthy
Today’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has been postponed after Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier tested positive for COVID-19. Other players’ tests have come out clear, but they are still in isolation. An official confirmation on the status of the IPL is awaited.
The IPL has been taking place this year in a caravan format amid strict bio-bubbles and COVID-19 protocols. Despite the dire situation in India, players had been shielded from getting the virus thanks to these restrictions. In that vein, this news should come as a shock to the organizers and it now throws the entire tournament in doubt as there is a need to examine whether there was a bio-bubble breach.
BCCI official confirms Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier’s positive test
A BCCI official reportedly spoke to ANI and confirmed the news of the two positive tests. “Varun and Sandeep tested positive and that made the RCB camp wary of the situation. The game is set to be postponed,” the official said. Further, other players have also fallen ill while it has not been confirmed if it is COVID-19. According to reports from The Age, ‘several personnel including support staff’ were isolating.
Further, ESPN reported that Varun had left the bio-bubble earlier. They wrote, “It is believed that Chakravarthy recently left the IPL bio-bubble to carry out a scan on his shoulder and it is there where he might have got exposed. Barring Chakravarthy and Warrier, the rest of the the KKR contingent’s tests came out clear.”
More news and official confirmation from the IPL and/or the teams concerned are awaited. But as of now, the IPL could be in serious doubts about continuing.
