New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is still in concussion protocol as of Saturday. However, head coach Jerod Mayo hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Maye being cleared in time for Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans.
During his Friday morning press conference at Gillette Stadium, head coach Jerod Mayo kept comments about quarterback Drake Maye brief. Mayo noted that Maye will be a limited participant in practice for the third consecutive day.
However, when asked if there was a chance Maye could be cleared to start Sunday against the Titans, Mayo responded with a straightforward “yes.” Drake Maye has been slowly building his strong rookie-year portfolio, impressing others with his performances despite a string of losses.
Mayo fielded several questions about the quarterback but consistently reminded reporters that he isn’t an expert on concussion protocol. A clearer picture of Maye’s status will emerge later when the team issues its Week 9 injury report.
Maye was removed from the game after the NFL’s spotter directed the team to have him evaluated in the medical tent. Although it was reported that Maye wanted to return by halftime, he stayed on the bench for the remainder of the game. Later, Mayo expressed his frustration with the referees, describing some of their calls as “questionable,” a remark many interpreted as a criticism of the absence of a penalty for the hit on Maye.
Jerod Mayo assesses Drake Maye replacement Jacoby Brissett
If Maye is not cleared, veteran Jacoby Brissett will make his first start since New England’s Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins. After stepping in for Maye against the Jets, Jacoby Brissett completed 15 of 24 passes for 132 yards and led the Patriots on three scoring drives in the second half. During New England’s game-winning drive, he threw for 53 yards and added 14 rushing yards.
The Patriots have been getting ready to work with either quarterback. Mayo mentioned that there isn’t a “significant difference” between Maye and Brissett.
Mayo also added that Joe Milton will start as the backup for the Patriots in the absence of Drake Maye.
