World No.2 Rory McIlroy has once again made headlines on both offline and online platforms, but this time not because of his performance or any accomplishments. Whether it is a rumor or based on facts, McIlroy’s $850 million deal with LIV Golf has shaken the golf world.

It has been reported that McIlroy is preparing to jump ship from PGA Tour to LIV Golf with not only a million-dollar contract but also an ownership stake in the league. Several questions have risen since then, with the most prominent being, is he going to follow the footsteps of his former colleagues?

The latest LIV Golf joinee to shock the golf world was Jon Rahm when he made his $600 million move public. McIlroy, who has been a huge critic of the Saudi-backed league has since made a U-turn on his comments. He stated he was ready to bury the hatchet and move towards a better future for the game.

He even stated that golfers are free to choose where they want to play and offered support to Rahm after his PGA exit. His shifted stance on LIV Golf was questioned by many but until today there were no official statements on the World No.2 switching to LIV.

Furthermore, reporter Jamie Weir of Sky Sports noted on X that the $850 million rumor “story is complete nonsense.” The story first came out from CityAM which stated that their deal was getting “close.”

Was Rory McIlroy’s shifted stance towards LIV Golf the beginning of the $850 million deal?

Rory McIlroy signing with LIV Golf for $850 million is still in the rumors. While many are claiming that it’ll be no surprise if the World No.2 jumps ship, there’s been no confirmation of any sort as of now.

Furthermore, last year, he questioned why anyone would want to join LIV Golf and even labeled it as already “dead in the water”. He further added,

I mean, there’s no one [that will go]. It’s dead in the water, in my opinion. I just can’t see any reason why anyone would go…it doesn’t seem like people are interested.

He even slammed Greg Norman, Phil Mickelson, and other key LIV Golf figures for exiting the PGA Tour. However, he softened his stance since Rahm’s $600 million signing. Whether McIlroy will end up joining LIV is yet to be known, but the rumors alone have shaken the golf world as of now.
