The Miami Dolphins have had an underwhelming season this year and their odds of making the playoffs are all but gone. The team needs to win their final regular season game against the New York Jets on Sunday to improve their odds and it seems they will do so without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

The franchise quarterback will be sidelined for yet another game as he recovers from a hip injury. With Tua Tagovailoa out, Tyler Huntley will be starting for the Dolphins. It has been an injury-riddled season for him as he will have missed six games including Sunday’s matchup.

Head Coach Mike McDaniel confirmed the same in his press conference. The Dolphins understand that even if this team makes it into the playoffs, the likelihood of them enjoying success is very low.

We’ll approach it like Snoop’s starting. It looks like the way that I approached the week was probably smart. I see it unlikely that Tua will see any action.

Tua Tagovailoa injured his hip against the Houston Texans

The quarterback has not been ruled out of the game. His status is questionable. The hip injury that limited him in practice was one he sustained in a December 19th matchup against the Texans and the subsequent week, he played in the game against the San Francisco 49ers. This resulted in the injury getting worse.

Notably, this is the same hip that Tua Tagovailoa had surgery on during his time at Alabama. The Dolphins and McDaniel do not want to risk injuring their franchise quarterback.

It’s quite literally being able to have the strength to do what we ask him to do as well as protecting himself from very serious injury if we don’t treat it appropriately.

Mike McDaniel added

So far, staying healthy has been the biggest concern throughout Tagovailoa’s career. Out of the last four seasons, he has played all 17 games for the team in just one season. Miami will make the playoffs if they win Sunday’s game against the Jets and if the Denver Broncos lose to the Kansas City Chiefs. While the former is a likely scenario, the odds of the latter happening are unlikely as Andy Reid has decided to rest key starters including Patrick Mahomes.
