YouTube personality and Twitch streamer IShowSpeed, born Darren Jason Watkins Jr., has once again entered the headlines with his kinetic phenom. This time around, the 20-year-old raced and defeated a former Big 12 400m hurdles champion and NCAA bronze medalist, Robert Griffin III, when they met up in Estonia.

After two defeats, the former NFL quarterback tried to reframe his loss to the YouTuber Speed as a teaching moment. He claimed that with his coaching, Speed can become fast enough to challenge Tyreek Hill.

In the closed doors of interpretations, it was more about Robert Griffin and his need for a platform like IShowSpeed’s to maintain being a relevant figure amongst the modern youth. Griffin’s 4.41-second 40-yard dash once meant everything. Today, it means less when a self-made internet personality can turn hustle into raw performance and global influence.

Additionally, Speed barely lost to Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles by 0.08 seconds a few months ago. He also defeated the famous fitness influencer Ashton Hall four times. The two incidents have somehow questioned traditional sports hierarchies. Speed is not a trained athlete in the conventional sense. He’s a product of the internet age, shaped by content, culture, and algorithms, not by coaching camps or scouting combines.

It didn’t help that the once Heisman winner and the athlete with a 4.41s combine time called Speed, “a natural athlete.”

Speed’s European trip has been nothing short of a wild adventure. Before racing RGIII in Estonia, he competed in a wife-carrying contest in Finland and struggled. He also visited Greece to meet Giannis Antetokounmpo, faced “racist pigeons” in Serbia, and had a funny moment with Lionel Messi fans in Croatia.

Robert Griffin III needs a win, and Speed might be the clue to it

Once hailed as a generational quarterback, Robert Griffin III faces a new battle against public opinion almost every other week. Currently, Griffin is at the center of controversy (again), this time after sharing a racially charged post and making disputed claims about WNBA star Angel Reese.

Griffin recently sparked controversy while weighing in on the rumored rivalry between WNBA stars Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark. The controversy began when he quote-tweeted a racist graphic targeting Reese. Though he condemned the image, Griffin added fuel to the fire by claiming that someone from Reese’s “inner circle” told him she “hates” Clark.

However, this news was almost immediately disputed by Reese, and her mother called out Griffin. He was further admonished by ex-Giants player Ryan Clark, ex-NBA player Shaquille O’Neal, and many leading voices in the industry.

That’s why his recent involvement with the YouTube megastar IShowSpeed could be more than a quirky crossover. Speed, whose 72 million subscribers dwarf the reach of most sports media figures, offers Griffin something he desperately needs: positive exposure to a massive Gen Z audience.

After being accused of “aura farming” and “race-baiting” by Clark, Griffin’s image has taken hit after hit. In light of these accusations, Griffin could align with a beloved and unpredictable creator who can give him space to create fresh relevance and a softer spotlight with humor and virality.

Considering Speed’s excellent showcase against some big news, defeating Tyreek Hill would be magnanimous. If Griffin could be a part of that, the good optics might also translate to him.
