With every passing day, the GOAT debate involving Michael Jordan and LeBron James carries on, as the latter continues to prove in season 23 that he is still an elite player.
No one in league history has been able to come close to matching the level of performance of the Los Angeles Lakers superstar at the ripe age of 41.
Even his teammates have reiterated that they might not be able even to walk properly when they reach that age. On that note, Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas said this on Run it Back:
Excuse me, when I say this, but y’all treat him like he ain’t nothing… LeBron James is sitting there holding every single basketball record… Jordan leads in no statistical basketball category… When you say who’s the greatest, y’all talk about the guy who gave y’all some shoes and warmups.
Isiah Thomas said
The Hall of Famer went on to say that when one talks about the greatest in any other sport, they usually look at the list of accolades the said athlete has accomplished. By that logic alone, he believes that LeBron James has surpassed Michael Jordan in the GOAT sweepstakes.
Isiah Thomas doesn't understand why Michael Jordan is still in GOAT convos with LeBron 🤯

However, Thomas believes that the cultural impact his former rival brought to the NBA is why many still believe him to be the greatest. He also believes that the opinion will change 15 years from now.
Fans lose it at Isiah Thomas’ LeBron James GOAT analogy
Basketball fans listening to this clip know the history between Isiah Thomas and Michael Jordan. From their skirmishes as Eastern Conference rivals to the Dream Team debacle, their beef spans decades.
Fans believe his opinion on LeBron James’ GOAT stance stems from that rivalry, and this ‘analogy’ is further proof that his hatred for the Chicago Bulls great is as strong as ever. Check out examples of those reactions below:

Dude so bitter. Look in the mirror IT, you have aged 30+ years…

You not even holding on to your youth but you choose to continue to carry this hate in your heart. Doesn’t look good on you OG
You have to remember that Isiah and MJ have genuinely disliked each other for about 40 years.

That feud is eternal.
True blue hater 😂

MJ blocked you from the Dream Team and you're still in your feelings. Isiah Thomas, you need to let this go.

Has anyone become less like-able over time then Isiah? The only time anyone pays attention to him is when he says something about Jordan. Otherwise he's basically invisible
— Joshua James (@mrjoshjames) January 8, 2026
Isiah Thomas made those statements with the belief that the statistical superiority LeBron James has displayed is enough to see him step above Michael Jordan in the GOAT race.
However, fans believe that this was not an unbiased opinion, as it stems from their murky past. Anyone who does not have a beef with “His Airness” would not have tread along this path.
17-year NBA veteran praises LeBron James’ longevity
Even though Isiah Thomas‘ past stands in the way of his ‘honest’ opinions, there are others who have been neutral and give their flowers where praise is due.

The professional sports standard for how to be anointed at a young age and then despite the many wanting to stop the prediction of greatness. He has continued to flourish at 41 years old. We will never see this journey again!

He believes this 23-year journey is something basketball fans should cherish, as there is a high chance that no one in the future will be able to do what he does.
