In what is great news for fans of Indian football, former Spanish striker David Villa has joined Odisha FC as the club’s global football advisor. The move comes after the club recently appointed a new British-Indian president, Raj Athwal.
David Villa is Spain’s leading goal scorer and has played for Europe’s best clubs in FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. The 39 year old will help in advising the club in signing new players and in their overall footballing development.

David Villa has won 15 trophies in his career and hopes that his contacts from his playing days will help the club greatly in the days to come. The Spanish striker retired from the sport last season and revealed that Odisha FC were keen on making him play in the first place.
David Villa said: “It was the first question of the people of Odisha!
“I took a decision a year ago to stop playing because I thought that was it was the [right] moment, not because I felt that I cannot play soccer anymore. I believe if I train I can play soccer for sure.“

The news was shared by the football club on social media and captioned: “World Cup winner and Spanish football legend @davidvilla has been brought in by Odisha FC to spearhead our global football operations.”
“Former OFC Head Coach, Josep Gombau and Victor Onate are also a part of the club’s Technical Football Committee along with David Villa.”
The move will certainly boost Odisha FC’s chances next season of improving next season and is a huge step for Indian football.
