Islam Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov’s teammate Luis Pena volunteers to fight Rafael dos Anjos

Islam Makhachev vs Rafael dos Anjos which was supposed to headline the UFC Fight Night next week, has been called off due to the Russian pulling out citing an injury.(undisclosed) This has brought immense disappointment to the MMA world, as a 5-year unbeaten Makhachev would have faced a stiff test in the form of Rafael dos Anjos. The fighter from the American Kickboxing Academy, has already had three fights cancelled (including this) this year – 2 fights with Rafael dos Anjos, 1 fight with Alexander Hernandez, which is a big worry.
In the wake of this, Makhachev’s and Khabib Nurmagomedov’s American Kickboxing Academy teammate, Luis Pena has volunteered to step in Makhachev’s place, offering to fight Rafael dos Anjos.
“Sh*t I’ll fight RDA” – Luis Pena on Twitter
It all started when Brett Okamoto of ESPN tweeted, “Breaking: Islam Makhachev (@MAKHACHEVMMA) out of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night main event, per sources. UFC looking for a short-notice replacement to face Rafael dos Anjos (@RdosAnjosMMA) on Saturday. A pumped up Luis Pena replied, “Sh*t I’ll fight RDA”. It took him just 8 minutes!!
“Violent Bob Ross” Luis Pena, is quite an accomplished fighter. Barring his submission loss to Khama Worthy, in his last outing, the American has enjoyed a successful stint in the UFC, with notable victories over Matt Wiman and Steve Garcia. It will be interesting to see if he’ll really step into fight the vastly experienced Rafael dos Anjos.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think Luis Pena has got what it takes to fight RDA?
