Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired from the UFC in 2020, remains a captivating figure in the sport. Despite his repeated denials, many fans continue to hope for a potential comeback from the Dagestani legend. However, his teammate and current lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, is not interested in taking that risk at all.
Since Nurmagomedov’s retirement, Makhachev has successfully taken his place to continue the Dagestani legacy. Over the years, Makhachev has successfully come out of Nurmagomedov’s shadow and has established himself as the pound-for-pound ace. When asked about Nurmagomedov’s comeback, Makhachev gave a rather hilarious response.
After his retirement, Nurmagomedov spent most of his time training his teammates, including Makhachev, Umar Nurmagomedov, and Usman Nurmagomedov. Umar is currently the top bantamweight contender, and Usman is the reigning Bellator lightweight champion. Apart from Makhachev, Nurmagomedov plans to push his cousins to get their hands on the UFC gold.
Islam Makhachev was asked if he’s ever tried to persuade Khabib to make a return to MMA:

Makhachev has been training with ‘The Eagle’ since they were kids and has always credited the Nurmagomedov family for his success. The pair have participated in thousands of sparring sessions, and Makhachev has always accepted defeat against the lightweight legend. According to many fans, Nurmagomedov cornering Makhachev is nothing short of a cheat code.
UFC ‘GOAT’ compares Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev
Like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev’s title reign has been extremely dominating. The Dagestani fighter has defended his title against top opponents and has outclassed them in their own style. Makhachev submitted Charles Oliveira, out-boxed Dustin Poirier, and knocked out Alexander Volkanovski to hold onto the UFC gold.
As expected, this caused comparisons between Makhachev and Nurmagomedov in their prime lightweight versions. Many fans and experts believe Islam Makhachev’s style is better and more entertaining than Khabib Nurmagomedov’s. Former UFC champion Georges St-Pierre also reviewed both fighters and explained the differences between the Dagestanis.
Makhachev is currently aiming for his next title defense and is willing to return in January 2025. Khabib Nurmagomedov has also talked about this fight and has given fans a sneak peek at the announcement. After his last masterclass performance at UFC 302, fans are desperate to see Makhachev back in the octagon.
