Islam Makhachev’s welterweight title win has sent the division into a frenzy, driven by rising contenders and veterans who remain competitive. The depth at 170 pounds has sparked debate over who deserves the champion’s first test. Former champion Kamaru Usman has emerged as the most discussed option. The discussion intensified after Ben Askren raised concerns about the current situation.

Makhachev’s dominant performance against former champion Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 confirmed his ability to succeed in a new division. The win established him as an immediate force at welterweight rather than a transitional champion. On the same card, Carlos Prates and Michael Morales delivered statement knockout victories to position themselves as title contenders.

Despite the rise of new challengers, Makhachev identified Usman as the most viable immediate opponent. That assessment was rooted in Usman’s historically dominant reign as welterweight champion. His experience and past consistency at the elite level continue to influence matchmaking logic. This stance led directly into Askren’s critical assessment of the situation.

He (Kamaru Usman) obviously was a champion for a long time, but it’s been a little while and he has had a few losses more recently. I feel like the newer guys at welterweight have done enough to just have a title shot for themselves.

Askren’s comments gained relevance when Usman’s recent competitive record was examined. Usman’s latest win over Joaquin Buckley snapped a three-fight losing streak. Before that victory, the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ had not won since 2021. Those details resurfaced when his manager Ali Abdelaziz pushed for a title fight.

Another contender complicating the picture is Irish standout Ian Garry, who has continued to rise within the division. Garry entered the top three after defeating former champion Belal Muhammad at UFC Qatar. That win reinforced his position among the division’s elite. His momentum has strengthened arguments against relying on legacy matchups.

Garry has also been vocal in questioning the direction of the welterweight title picture. He has labeled a potential Usman matchup for Makhachev as irrelevant to the current competitive landscape. His stance reflects a broader push from active contenders seeking merit-based opportunities. Sean Brady has also recently questioned the same matchup, reinforcing growing tension between experience and momentum.

The broader stakes now focus on timing and readiness across the welterweight landscape. Kamaru Usman has resumed training while preparing for a possible title opportunity. Islam Makhachev remains the division’s focal point with several challengers emerging. Ben Askren’s comments continue to influence debate around merit and direction as he returns from his health scare.

Islam Makhachev’s striking gets praised by former champion

Ahead of UFC 322, there were doubts about Makhachev’s striking, given Jack Della Maddalena’s boxing background. While he dominated on the ground, Islam Makhachev was able to match JDM’s striking exchanges. His ability to mix feints, setups, and timing showcased a higher level of stand-up skill. The performance drew recognition from Israel Adesanya, who highlighted Makhachev’s striking technique.

I was very impressed with Islam’s feinting. Islam did that in his last fight with JDM. There were points where he was feinting like 12 times before he even threw a jab. This was later in the fight as well, so I was really impressed with that.

Adesanya’s comments carry added significance due to his own reputation as one of the UFC’s most technical strikers. Recognition from a fighter of Adesanya’s caliber reinforces Makhachev’s growth in striking. It validates his evolution into a well-rounded mixed martial artist. Such praise emphasizes why Islam Makhachev is considered a dominant and versatile champion in the sport.
