In Short
  • Israel Adesanya suffered his fourth consecutive loss after being TKO'd by Joe Pyfer at UFC Seattle.
  • Despite the defeat, Adesanya stated he has no plans to retire and will continue competing in MMA.
  • He emphasized the importance of staying active for champions, calling out Khamzat Chimaev for his inactivity since winning the title.

Israel Adesanya ruled the UFC middleweight division with near-total dominance some years back. His kickboxing skills translated seamlessly into MMA, allowing him to dictate distance and pace, often leaving opponents completely helpless. Now 36, the former two-time middleweight champion is in the midst of a challenging stretch, having suffered a fourth straight loss after Joe Pyfer won via TKO at UFC Seattle.

The main event began with both fighters exchanging measured strikes. Adesanya relied on his range and footwork to control the early moments, while Pyfer applied pressure to create openings. In the second round, Pyfer secured a takedown and landed sustained ground-and-pound. This forced the referee to stop the fight at 4:18 by technical knockout, awarding the Pennsylvania native the biggest win of his career.

Once known for his fearless approach, Adesanya appeared helpless as Pyfer secured a full mount and delivered a flurry of punches to his head. The referee, Herb Dean, stopped the fight, and ‘Stylebender’ briefly touched his head to the octagon floor in visible disappointment. He remained emotional during the post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier, where questions focused on his plans and future in MMA.

You keep going. Again, and again, and again, and again, and again. I’m not leaving. You’ll never stop me. I might get beat, but I’ll always remain undefeated.

Before UFC Seattle, Adesanya last competed in February 2025 at UFC Saudi Arabia, where he was knocked out by Nassourdine Imavov. Before that, he was submitted by Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 305 in August 2024. This streak started when he lost a unanimous decision and his belt to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 in September 2023. His last professional win came in April 2023 against Alex Pereira at UFC 287.

The UFC Seattle matchup drew significant attention, as ‘Stylebender’ was coming off one of the longest layoffs of his career. He appeared ready to take on any challenge and prepared to handle Pyfer’s punching power. Pyfer was known to spar without wrapping his hands, increasing session intensity, while Adesanya focused on working with heavy hitters to get used to the same level of power as his opponent.

After his knockout loss to Joe Pyfer, Israel Adesanya clarified that he was not retiring immediately. He acknowledged the setback but emphasized he plans to continue competing, framing the fight as part of a final phase in his career. These remarks position the Seattle defeat as a moment of reflection rather than an endpoint, highlighting his commitment to pursue a limited number of remaining MMA bouts.

Israel Adesanya calls out UFC middleweight champion for inactivity

During his prime, Israel Adesanya fought consistently in the UFC middleweight division. In 2022, he competed three times, defeating Robert Whittaker at UFC 271 in February, Jared Cannonier at UFC 276 in July, and losing to Alex Pereira at UFC 281 in November. In 2023, he fought twice, winning against Pereira at UFC 287 in April and losing by decision to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 in September.

Khamzat Chimaev was once one of the most active UFC contenders. In 2020, he fought three times in just three months, quickly making his mark in the welterweight division. His momentum later slowed due to COVID-19 complications and other injuries. However, foot injury resurfaced following his middleweight title win at UFC 319. This led Adesanya to note the importance of staying active for champions like ‘Borz’.

I’m not sure what’s holding it up, ’cause I felt like he would be an active champion. He should be an active champion ’cause he’s a guy that likes to fight a lot when he was coming up, just like me. But when I got the belt, I didn’t let that slow me down. I think he should be doing the same.

Israel Adesanya was initially appreciative of Chimaev winning the middleweight belt at UFC 319, believing the division was in capable hands. However, injuries and inactivity have shifted his perspective on the champion’s activity. The Chechen star is now set to make his first title defense against Sean Strickland at UFC 328, and Stylebender’s comments highlight the importance of consistent competition for champions.
