Israel Adesanya to follow Jon Jones to heavyweight; Says “it will happen when the time is right”

Israel Adesanya and Jon Jones

On Monday, Jon Jones announced that he is vacating his UFC Light Heavyweight championship. Jones (25-1 MMA, 12-0 UFC), further added that he was having talks with UFC over a move up to the heavyweight division but his debut fight is not booked yet.

It has been talked for a while about Jones moving to heavyweight but now it’s going to be a reality. But with this move, Jones will be missing his 205-pound possible matchup against the middleweight champ Israel Adesanya. With Jones planning to move up, Adesanya has also expressed the desire to move up in the heavyweight division when the right time comes.

Earlier, Jones had put pressure on Adesanya to move but ‘The Last Stylebender’ had insisted thatbhenwould do it on his own terms.

Israel Adesanya ready to follow Jon Jones

During Tuesday’s UFC 253 media call, Adesanya told reporters, “Look how long it took him to move up to heavyweight. Finally. He was expecting me to do it straight away, but I hadn’t defended my belt yet. I’ve defended my belt twice now, I’m going to defend it a few more times and then do what I set out to do. But, yeah, the pot Calling the kettle black on his part. Go put some (expletive) muscle on your chopstick legs and go (expletive) fight Francis Ngannou and watch him break you. I hope he doesn’t, though. Maybe he does. Who knows?”

Despite the fact that Jones has now almost moved up, Adesanya is reluctant about his matchup with him. When asked about this matchup with Jones, Adesanya replied, “One hundred percent. It doesn’t change my plans. My plan is still going forward as planned. So, yeah, same thing.”

But for now, Adesanya will be looking forward to defend his 185-pound title against Paulo Costa at the main event of UFC 253 on September 26.
