Mertens had a good start to the season. On the hardcourts of Australia she reached the Finals of the Gippsland Trophy, and then the round of sixteen of the Australian Open. She followed that up by reaching the Semi-final of the Dubai Open, her highlight of the season this year. At the just concluded Charleston Open, she lost in very first match on the green clay to Alize Cornet. 

At the Istanbul Cup so far, she beat Laura Arruabarrena, 6-2 7-5,  in her opener, and then got the better of Viktorija Golubic 6-4 4-6 6-1 in the second match. Her Quarter Final Opponent is Katerina Siniakova. Siniakova had lost three of her last four encounters before stepping on court here, but those were played on hardcourts. Here on clay this week she has already beaten Cristina Bucsa and Kristina Mladenovic.

The top seed Mertens has played well so far, but she did show signs of weakness in her second round encounter. Siniakova who looks a much better player on clay, but will have to play out of her skin to salvage something from this match.
