Elise Mertens vs Sorana Cirstea: Match Preview
Elise Mertens started her campaign with a comprehensive 6-0 6-2 win over Laura Arruabarrena. Next up she got the better of Viktorija Golubic, 6-4 4-6 6-1. In the Quarter-final clash with Katarina Siniakova. Mertens beat the Czech 6-4 6-4. In the Semi-finals, Mertens dismissed the Charleston Open champion Veronika Kudermetova 6-1 6-4 to reach her second tour-level final of the season, after Gippsland. Her Final opponent is the Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
Cirstea reached the third round of the Australian Open earlier this year. Since then though she has not been able to go past the first or second round of most tournaments. But her fortunes seemed to have changed a bit on clay. Here in Istanbul, she has defeated three opponents to reach the Semi-finals of the tournament. Her first victim was Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine. Next up she defeated the young Russian Anastasia Potapova. In the quarter-final she got the better of Fiona Ferro of France. Cirstea got lucky as her French opponent retired hurt after losing the first set 6-4. In the Semis she again defeated her opponent, Marta Kostyuk, in straight sets, 6-4 6-4.
Elise Mertens vs Sorana Cirstea: Head-to-Head
The two players have met twice on the tour before, and both those encounters have been won by Cirstea, so she leads the head to head 2-0. The last time they met was in Doha in 2018, where Cirstea won in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
Elise Mertens vs Sorana Cirstea: Prediction
Mertens has been very impressive in the tournament. But the level of her service game seems to be falling off with every game, and she will have to guard against that. Cirstea is yet to drop a set in the competition so far. The experienced Romanian though has been guilty of making a lot of unforced errors in this tournament.
Match Prediction: Elise Mertens will beat Sorana Cirstea in three sets.
