“It can happen to almost anyone” – Roger Federer on Novak Djokovic’s US Open 2020 disqualification
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic has been on a terrific run over the course of the last year or so. He is gaining ground on the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal by winning title after title. His most recent one came at the Australian Open 2021 with a nearly flawless performance despite suffering from a serious abdominal injury which was later confirmed to be a muscle tear that could have posed a huge threat to even his career.
Djokovic’s win at the Australian Open led many to state that he would have won the US Open 2020 as well, had he not been disqualified for hitting a line judge with a ball accidentally on her throat. The incident created quite a lot of furore with many criticizing for his reckless behavior as well as coming to the support of Djokovic. Now, Roger Federer has given his say on the incident.
‘Incredibly unlucky’ – Roger Federer on Novak Djokovic’s disqualification
Roger Federer addressed reporters in Switzerland today and talked about the incident of Djokovic’s disqualification and said, “There’s no point in me rolling it up. At the US Open he was just incredibly unlucky (in his disqualification). Everyone knows that. Of course you have to control yourself. But that can happen to almost anyone. With the Adriatic tour he meant it really well? Was it too early for that?”
Talking further about Djokovic and the controversy surrounding the PTPA and ATP, Federer said, “I haven’t seen Novak in a long time. He does his best for the players. It just didn’t fit when he was president of the Players’ Association and at the same time founded the new organization. You don’t always have to be the same. But it is important to exchange ideas.
The negative side noises are of course not ideal for tennis. In the meantime, everything has calmed down a bit. There is talk again about results and records. That is a good thing. It will show what is going on with the players’ association, the PTPA and the ATP. I am not here in Doha to make policy. My focus is on my comeback.”
