World No.2 and first-seed Simona Halep will look to reach the last-four stage when she faces Yulia Putintseva in the quarterfinals at the Italian Open 2020. It will be a rematch of the Round of 32 contest that happened at this year’s Australian Open.

Talking about the performance in the tournament so far, Simona Halep is yet to lose a set. The 28-year old Romanian continued from where she left against Dayana Yastremska in the third round. Two-time Major winner Halep secured a close yet a straight-set victory over Yastremska 7-5, 6-4.
On the other hand, Putintseva after clearing the initial rounds went up against a tough opponent in the form of compatriot and 10th-seed Elena Rybakina. The 25-year old Kazakh lost the opening set before making a stunning comeback to shock Rybakina 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 in a three-set thriller.

Prior to their meeting in Rome, Halep and Putintseva have faced each other only once. As said above, that meeting came in Melbourne this year, where Halep claimed a convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory over Putintseva. So the Romanian leads the head-to-head record 1-0.

Another straight-set win is on the cards for Halep, though she might need to put in the extra effort against her counterpart Putintseva, who is full in confidence. However, if Putintseva somehow manages to topple Halep, it may be called as the upset of the tournament. Having said that, it looks the unlikeliest of the possibilities and expect Halep to book a ticket for the semifinals.
