Italian Open 2020: Turn of events as Defending champ Pliskova retires, Halep wins
In the women’s finals of Italian Open 2020, was considered to be a close battle as the first seed was up against the second seed. However, Simona Halep reigned at the Roman court after Karolina Ploskova, one set down retired. In their 12th encounter the final scoreline was 6-0, 2-1 as Pliskova lost the battle.
Pliskova succumbs to injury
Halep had reached back-to-back finals in Rome in 2017 and 2018. Today she earned early breaks and emerged the winner of the opening set. Pliskova failed to hold her serve. She also took a brief medical timeout between sets. Later she bowed out after 32 minutes on Court Centrale.
Pliskova showed great performance throughout the tour this week but Pliskova emerged with a wrapped left thigh and lacked rhythm. She struggled to keep her first serve in and committed a double fault to fall behind a shocking double break.
However, Pliskova should be judged on her exemplary performance earlier. Her appearance was clearly undermined due to the thigh strain. She is due to compete at the French Open soon. Thus she will try to recover soon, no wonder she conceded instead of taking the undue load and worsen her injury.
Simona Halep now has a 14 match winning streak; She won the Dubai Duty Free in February earlier this year.
