In the semi-final of the 2023 Italian Open World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas will clash with World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev. Tsitsipas was a finalist in 2022 in which Rafael Nadal defeated him. This is the third time the Greek has reached at least the semi-final level, including 2022 and 2019. In 2019, Tsitsipas lost again to Rafael Nadal, but in the semi-final. The 24-year-old defeated Borna Coric in the quarter-final to reach this match. This is the first-ever semi-final for Daniil Medvedev at the Italian Open. Daniil Medvedev has never looked as comfortable on clay as he does in Rome. He defeated Yannick Hanfmann in the quarter-final to set up the match with Tsitsipas.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is dying for his first clay title before going on to the French Open. Since he is a clay court specialist and he hasn’t achieved much favorable results in the season, this would be an ‘ALL IN’ semi-final for the Greek. Tsitsipas lost in the quarter-final in the Monte Carlo Masters against Taylor Fritz. His biggest success of the season came at the Barcelona Open, where he reached the finals, but lost to World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz.

In the Madrid Open too, Tsitsipas could reach only the quarter-final. He lost to the Madrid Open lucky loser Jan Lennard Struff in 3 sets in the Quarterfinal. Tsitsipas brought the downfall of 2 Italian stars and local favorites in the tournament. He defeated both Lorenzo Sonego and Lorenzo Musetti on the same day to reach the quarter-final.

Daniil Medvedev, who had a successful hard court season, moved to the clay court with doubts in his mind. But he has done better than expected by most. He reached the Quarter-final in the Monte Carlo Masters, where he lost to Holger Rune. In the Madrid Open, he lost to an indomitable Aslan Karatsev. In the Italian Open he has already defeated his biggest rival Alexander Zverev in the round of 16. Medvedev will be moving on to French Open in the next week with more confidence as he wins each round in the Italian Open.

This is the 1st meeting of the two players in 2023 but the 11th Head to Head meeting overall. In their head-to-head, Daniil Medvedev has better results with him winning 7 of the 11 matches. The two have played each other on clay twice before and both have won the match one time each. This Semi-final is hence very well poised as Daniil Medvedev is excelling above his expectations on clay and Stefanos Tsitsipas is a specialist in clay surface.
