Coco Gauff has reached back-to-back finals on the clay swing. After being denied the Madrid Open by Aryna Sabalenka about two weeks ago, Gauff has inched closer to her first Italian Open title.
She went past 2024 Paris Olympics champion Qinwen Zheng in the semifinals to set up a clash with home favorite Jasmine Paolini in the final. Before setting up the match against the American ace, Paolini knocked out Peyton Stearns.

Coco Gauff vs. Jasmine Paolini: Match Preview
Coco Gauff has not yet won a title since lifting the WTA Finals last year. After starting the season in emphatic fashion, Gauff produced mediocre performances in the five tournaments she played following her defeat in the Australian Open quarterfinals to Paula Badosa. She failed to win more than two matches in those events.
In Madrid, she ended that streak by reaching the final but it was Aryna Sabalenka who prevailed over her to take home her third title in the Spanish capital. En route to the final, the 21-year-old also knocked out defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semifinals.
In Rome then, Gauff dropped two sets: in her first match against Victoria Mboko and in the semifinal against Qinwen Zheng. The 2023 US Open champion has lifted just one clay court title in her career: the 2021 Emilia-Romagna Open.
Jasmine Paolini, on the other hand, progressed to the championship match for the first time this season. Before her home tournament, she reached the semifinal twice: in the Miami Open and the Stuttgart Open, losing both to Sabalenka.
En route to the final, the 29-year-old dropped only one set (in her quarterfinal match against Diana Shnaider). While Gauff lifted three titles last year, Paolini was the winner of the Dubai Open, which she clinched by beating Anna Kalinskaya in February. Since then, she had two finals that year, at Wimbledon and the French Open.
Paolini has become the first home finalist in the tournament in more than a decade. She will be bidding to win her third WTA title as well as her second WTA 1000 one after the Dubai Open. In the rankings table, Gauff will return to her career high of No.2 on next Monday. Paolini will remain in the fifth position but her victory will take her to a career-high ranking of No.4.

Coco Gauff will enter the final as the favorite to win. She is aiming to win her 10th WTA title and has an edge over Jasmine Paolini if the head-to-head records are considered. Paolini, en route to the semifinals, defeated three seeded players.
Gauff, who is 11-2 on clay so far this season, has won two of the three matches they played against each other. But the World No.3 lost the match they played on clay. Before this final, they met in the Stuttgart Open quarterfinal which the Italian won in straight sets.
Paolini is a French Open finalist, reaching the summit clash last year but lost the match to five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek. Gauff too is a finalist in Paris. She progressed to the championship match in 2022 and was unsuccessful in defeating Swiatek.
