The Euros is all about the fans, the celebrations and the atmosphere. However, no big tournament is complete without a little bit of rivalry and banter. On matchday 2 in Group B, defending champions Italy took on Albania in an exciting clash. Prior to the game, a moment of banter between the two sets of fans went viral on social media.
Italians are known for their affinity to spaghetti while pasta is also seen as a symbol of national identity. However, both sets of fans ‘came up’ against each other ahead of the group stage fixture as Albanian fans chose to do the ‘extreme’. In a clip that is making rounds on social media, an Albanian fan is seen taunting Italian supporters with a stack of spaghetti.
An opposition fan begging on his knees was not enough to prevent him from doing so. That being said, everything was taken in a light-hearted sense as fans from both sides were seeing laughing it off after the incident.
The game that followed was no less of a rollercoaster, even though Italy eventually secured the win.
Albania score fastest goal in Euros history against defending champions
Italy kicked off their title defense with a 2-1 win and despite the points, Albania did give the Gli Azzurri a run for their money. Not even thirty seconds had passed when Albanian forward Nedim Bajrami punished an error from the Italian backline. 1-0 read the score line as Bajrami fired his shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma just 22 seconds into the match!
His goal made history as Bajrami became the owner of the fastest-ever goal scored in the competition. However, despite the early setback, the Blues were not ready to give up. It only took the champions ten minutes to find a response as Alessandro Bastoni headed home from the far post. Albania saw their lead disappear in just 15 minutes as Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella handed his side the lead.
The No.18 took a swing from the edge of the penalty area, which evaded the opposition goalkeeper’s grasp and fell into the net. It was one way traffic thereafter as Italy announced their intention to not give up their crown without a fight. That being said, Albania spurned a chance in the 89th minute to score an equalizer to make it 2-2. Hosts Germany initiated the tournament with a massive 5-1 win over Scotland.
