Drivers of Ford Mustangs swept the Top 10 in the second practice session and top 5 in the first session on the first day of the 64th annual Daytona 500 as they were successful in practicing drafting together and the Toyota Camrys were only able to finish p6 to 10 in a second practice session though they were the first to hit the track.

Toyota has six drivers using their cars in 2022, spread across the Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI Racing teams, and the aero platforms of those cars will be instrumental for their success. Now 23XI racing driver Bubba Wallace has expressed his opinion on drafting with their new NextGen Toyota NASCARs

Bubba Wallace acknowledged the fact that there is a lot of things left to figure out about how the new car works in the draft and said he is hopeful that the team will be able to understand all that in the duels in Daytona before the next race. Bubba Wallace went on to say Toyota had a 2-hour long aero meeting to understand the positioning of the car before starting practice in Daytona.

The aero platform of this new car is a little bit different. There will be a lot to figure out. Hopefully, we will do a lot of that in the Duel to see what we can do with this car and what we need to work on when we go to Talladega and back here to Daytona, says Bubba Wallace.

“It’s a world of unknown that takes a lot of digesting and dissecting that makes us better than we were with last year’s car,” Bubba Wallace added.

We had a two-hour long aero meeting before we got on track to try to figure out where to position our car. Things are a little different, but at the end of the day, it’s driving race cars. When you’ve got the run, make the most of it and utilize that. Put yourself in the right position,” Bubba Wallace explained.

Kurt Busch explained the extent of Toyota’s work that has gone to preparation saying Toyota has provided them with an 82-page wind tunnel report on drafting and shred his hopes that the team might be able to extract the right information that can give them sped advantages.

One thing at 23XI that I’m excited about, and the information from TRD and Toyota, is all of these different channels of information. There’s this app, there’s this drawing, there’s this graph,” Kurt Busch said.

There was an 82-page wind tunnel report on drafting with this car and this final rule package. It’s endless with the amount of information that you dig through, and you have to pick the right things to stack on top of each other now to just find that one-tenth of a second,” Kurt Busch added.
